Devido a influencia de São Paulo, o nome se tornou comum entre os primeiros cristãos, sendo dado à outros santos e seis Papas. Na Inglaterra era relativamente raro durante a Idade Média, mas se tornou mais freqüente no inicio do século XVII. Uma figura notável que tinha esse nome foi um dos ícones da Revolução Norte-Americana, Paul Revere (1735-1818), que avisou os norte-americanos da chegada do exercito ingles. Entre figuras famosas da arte que levavam o nome estão os pintores do Impressionismo Francês Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) e Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), e o expressionista suíço Paul Klee (1879-1940). Esse também era o nome de um lendário lenhador norte-americano Paul Bunyan.
